It was raining steadily as I drove to the scenic township of Te Anau, on the verge of the Fiordland National Park. I was hoping the weather would clear, allowing me to take a helicopter journey into the more remote areas of the park. Dawn arrived overcast and grey, making the trip look doubtful, but slowly the clouds broke and we took off. Within minutes we were flying over Lake Manapouri, watching the island-dotted water drift by under our feet.
