Phillip Bartlett

Bio

New Zealand photographer Phillip Bartlett’s work is a unique fusion of two distinct worlds: the spectacular landscapes of New Zealand and the vibrant diversity of Indonesia. Equally comfortable in the remote wilderness of New Zealand as he is tracking elusive wildlife in Indonesia’s dense rainforests, Phillip’s photography offers a captivating look at some of the world’s most beautiful and varied ecosystems. His passion for nature and wildlife photography has led him to embrace diverse environments, blending his love for the New Zealand landscape with the rich cultural and natural beauty of Indonesia.

In 2005, Phillip founded Capture New Zealand, pioneering New Zealand multi-region photography workshops. Through these workshops, Phillip shares his extensive knowledge of the New Zealand landscape and mentors photographers to refine their craft while immersed in the awe-inspiring beauty of the New Zealand wilderness.

Following the success of Capture New Zealand, Phillip and his wife Engelina expanded their workshop offerings to Indonesia in 2015, founding Indonesia Photo Workshops. Their vision was to provide photographers with unique and adventurous experiences in one of the most biodiverse and unexplored countries on Earth. Phillip’s connection to Indonesia began in 1992, the same year he met Engelina and her family. Engelina, a descendant of the Royal Kingdom of Surakarta in Central Java and with a background in teaching and counseling, contributed invaluable cultural and creative insights to the development of the workshops. Together, they created innovative programs designed for passionate photographers intrigued by Indonesia’s diverse cultures and natural wonders.

Phillip’s fluency in Bahasa Indonesia has also played a key role in establishing a vast network of relationships throughout the country, from remote Papuan hill tribes to figures within the highest levels of Indonesian society. His extensive network and ability to communicate with diverse communities have allowed participants to experience Indonesia in a way few outsiders ever do.

Phillip’s photography is held in private collections worldwide and has been featured commercially, both nationally and internationally. He is currently working on a wildlife project in Indonesia, documenting the country's diverse ecosystems and the incredible species that inhabit them.
